Penang Day 3

After yesterday's hard walking, it was always going to be a more relaxed programme for us today. The plan was to explore the more upscale Gurney area. But before that, it was time for a leisure dim sum breakfast!

The walkway that we have been using every morning, for the past two days.

It was a a bit of walk to De Tai Tong Cafe but since it was still early in the morning, it wasn't that hot...yet.

Dim sum here is served Hong Kong style, where push trolleys go around and you simply order from them.

The spread may look thin but was definitely more than enough for two people. The dim sum was generally good though the price played a part too.

We came by Toh Soon Cafe, known for their coffee and toast, on our way to have dim sum. It was crowded before, and it was still crowded when we walked back.

The charcoal grilled toast, very old school.

Sadly that wasn't for us as we were very full from the dim sum.

We did get the kopi, which tasted rather good for me.

-----

With that kopi in hand, we waited at the bus stop for the bus number that the hotel staff told us to get on to get to Gurney Paragon. But after waiting in vain for half an hour or so, we realised that the hotel staff must have given us the wrong information, something that we ascertained afterwards. So we asked a local, who was very helpful and told us to hop on the CAT to the Komtar bus interchange to take another bus number instead.

So after wasting quite a bit of time figuring out how to get here, we are finally at Gurney Paragon!

-----

I guess both of us secretly enjoyed indulging our time at Gurney Paragon, for its spacious corridors, high ceilings, clean toilets and shopping. There isn't a lot of stores available but it was still a good place to just walk around.

The cat's conquest - Jelly Bunny. But where's the mouse?

And she cannot even bear to throw away the cute paper bag. Duh...

Lunch was at TWG. This is probably the most expensive meal we have had during this trip but it was still cheaper than the TWG back home. But we had to order a pot of tea each. Damn.

Though the pot of tea made us felt like towkay and tai tai. Unfortunately, the food failed to impress.

Gurney Drive is just beside Gurney Paragon. There isn't much to see because the shops they have are identical to what we have. So we did only a quick walk around the place.

Dinner was at the Gurney hawker centre which was just beside Gurney Drive.

The abundance of space is so important. Even though it is a popular, the place wasn't crowded at all.

The famous stall 71's Char Kway Teow. The queue can get a bit crazy so if it's a relatively short queue then you are in luck. Definitely worth a go even if you have to wait for a while.

The indian rojak - choice of sotong and fried dough, with the essential mix that comes along with every order. Can't remember how much but definitely way expensive and tasted so bad. The sotong and fried dough wasn't even heated up through frying but simply cut up, mixed and ready to serve.

The normal rojak was far better.

For satays, we tried the ones from the Malay store rather than the Indian ones after all these overcharging for bad food. The best satay we have had since day one.

We ordered the chee cheong fan simply because we haven't had any yet and just wanted to try as many types of food in Penang. It was actually pretty normal.

Everyone raves about the ice kachang in Penang but for me, there's nothing special about it. I just feel it is towards the more old school type, those that I had when I was in Primary School that's all.

There are also some roadside stalls that sells accessories and toys that may be worth a little look.

-----

Getting back was a breeze as well. There's a bus stop that's no more than 100m away and it probably took only 15mins for the bus ride.

And with that, we spent the last night trying to have as much food as possible. And that, is not enough.
