Penang Day 4

With only the morning to spare on this last day of our short getaway, it was our final burst of fire to try all of the different Penang food dishes available.

First stop was to pick up our daily dose of caffeine at Kedai Kopi Kong Thai Lai.

The ingenious interpretation of a takeaway kopi in Penang.

Breakfast was over at Kafe Kheng Pin which was probably about 500m from our hotel. We were there to try their chicken rice and lor bak. But unfortunately the chicken rice store wasn't open until later in the morning.

So we had this!

The lor bak was pretty decent and goes well with the sauce. But I guess it really goes down to the thick prawn paste that they use.

And we had this! The nasi lemak was surprising good, especially the ikan bilis.

-----

After breakfast, we took the CAT bus to the Komtar bus interchange. And from there, it was a march towards Ghee Hiang for their famous Tau Sar Piah. We walked for one kilometre to get there and it was definitely a blessing that the weather was cooling since it was still the morning.

Their pastry are very good and affordable. Having such a swanky standalone building (in fact they have quite a few around Penang) proves that Ghee Hiang is definitely a tourist go-to place.

-----

By this time, we were pretty familiar with the bus route and so from there, we took a bus back to the hotel area. And we happened to realise that Kafe Kek Seng was along the way back to our hotel. So even though we were still relatively full, gluttony got the better of us.

Here they say that you should try the chicken rice and their ice kachang. And so we did.

We both probably felt the chicken rice was disappointing. And in our case, the chilli sauce makes or breaks the chicken rice. Lol.

Their ice kachang is famous because it couples scoops of durian ice cream with a dash of jello. But I guess that doesn't hide the fact that it still tasted pretty old school. I think this goes down to the fact that they have much less of those coloured sugar syrup.

One last mural scored on the way to the hotel.

And oh yes. We also had takeaway popiah from Kafe Kek Seng. But it was awful. Lol.

-----

After checking out of the hotel, we simply retraced the route to get back to the airport. Taking the CAT bus to Komtar bus interchange and from there, the 401E express bus. There is little hassle in this so it was a great option for us, but probably less so if you intend to bring suitcase luggages.

Along the coast to the airport.

-----

The Penang International Airport is not huge. There are limited restaurants and shops for you to spend time in. And we had to make the bad decision to have lunch inside the departure hall as there was only one food store and the menu was depressing.

Maggi mee goreng, home-cooked style.

And the nasi lemak we had, where the rice has no coconut milk. Although the chicken tasted like KFC. Lol.

-----

That marks the end of our gastronomical journey in Penang. There were both hits and misses of varying degrees but I guess overall, it was a satisfying trip to taste this food capital of Malaysia. As one chapter turns to a close, another page might just be flapping around and I can vaguely see it entitled - Malacca.
